Trimming and Pruning - What's The Difference?

Trimming and pruning are essential tree and hedge care practices, each with its specific purpose and benefits. While both involve cutting branches and foliage, they serve different goals and are used in various situations.

Trimming is primarily focused on maintaining or enhancing the aesthetic appearance of trees and hedges. It involves the removal of overgrown branches and leaves to shape the plant, promote a dense and uniform growth pattern, and maintain the desired size and form. Trimming is often applied to:

  • Large Privacy Hedges: Regular trimming keeps these hedges dense and uniform, ensuring they provide maximum privacy and aesthetic appeal.
  • Ornamental Trees and Shrubs: Trimming shapes these plants into specific forms or maintains their designed appearance, contributing to the overall landscaping design.

Pruning, on the other hand, is aimed at the health and structural integrity of the tree. It involves selectively removing branches to improve the tree's health, encourage growth, and reduce the risk of falling branches. Pruning is crucial for:

  • Trees Encroaching on Buildings, Homes, or Views: Removing branches that are too close to structures can prevent damage and maintain clear sightlines, ensuring safety and preserving views.
  • Removing Dead or Diseased Branches: Pruning helps to prevent the spread of disease and pests by removing affected branches, thereby protecting the tree's overall health.
  • Promoting Fruit Production: In fruit trees, pruning can enhance fruit quality and yield by ensuring that resources are not wasted on excessive or unproductive growth.

While trimming is generally performed on a more regular schedule to maintain shape and appearance, pruning is often done less frequently, based on the tree's growth cycle and health needs. Both practices, however, are vital for the longevity, beauty, and safety of your property.

Trimming Services We Offer

Canopy Raising: Removing lower branches to increase the clearance under the tree's canopy. This service is often requested for trees like oaks (Quercus spp.) and maples (Acer spp.) to enhance access and visibility beneath the tree, especially in urban or landscaped areas.

Canopy Thinning: Selectively removing branches to improve light penetration and air circulation throughout the canopy. This service benefits species such as the Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) and the American beech (Fagus grandifolia), promoting healthier growth and reducing disease risk.

Deadwooding: Removing dead, dying, or diseased branches to improve tree health and safety. This is crucial for all tree species, including Tennessee's state tree, the Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), to prevent falling branches and maintain structural integrity.

Structural Pruning: Enhancing the tree's structural stability through selective pruning, particularly important for young and developing trees like the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) and Dogwood (Cornus florida), to ensure a strong, healthy growth pattern.

Crown Reduction: Reducing the size of the tree's canopy for safety, health, or aesthetic reasons. This technique is often applied to larger species, such as the White Pine (Pinus strobus) and the American Elm (Ulmus americana), to reduce wind resistance and the risk of storm damage.

Hazard Trimming: Identifying and removing potential hazards, such as weak branches or limbs that could fall and cause damage or injury. This service is essential for all large tree species, particularly those in close proximity to homes, sidewalks, or power lines.

Fruit Tree Pruning: Specialized pruning to improve fruit production and health in fruit-bearing trees, like the Apple (Malus domestica) and Peach (Prunus persica), which are popular in Tennessee's home gardens and orchards.

Vista Pruning: Creating or enhancing views by selectively trimming trees, a service often requested for properties with scenic landscapes. This may involve trimming species like the Hickory (Carya spp.) and Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) to frame views without compromising the trees' health.

Emergency Tree Trimming: Responding to and addressing tree damage after storms or other emergencies, crucial for all tree species, especially those that have suffered from extreme weather conditions.

Seasonal Pruning: Tailoring trimming practices to the specific needs of the season, such as preparing trees for winter dormancy or stimulating spring growth, applicable to a wide range of species including deciduous trees like the Oak and Maple, and evergreens like the Eastern White Pine.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trimming

The frequency of trimming depends on the type of tree or hedge and its growth rate. Generally, hedges require trimming 2-3 times a year to maintain shape and density, while trees can be trimmed annually to remove unwanted growth and maintain health. We can provide a more specific schedule based on your plants' needs.

It varies depending on the type of hedge or shrub and the desired appearance. Some fast-growing hedges may need trimming 2-3 times during the growing season, while others may only need annual or biannual trimming.  During an on-site visit we can give you the best recommended trimming and pruning interval for your specific plants.

Pruning typically involves selectively removing branches to improve plant health and shape, while trimming focuses on maintaining a neat, uniform appearance for hedges and shrubs.  The two terms are often used interchangeably but they do mean different things.

Yes, for large hedges and trees, especially those that cannot be safely reached with a ladder, we use a bucket truck. This allows us to trim at various heights safely and efficiently, ensuring a precise and thorough job.

I hired White’s Tree Service to cut a large tree in my yard. They had done work in my neighborhood as had other tree services and storm chasers after the big storm last year. I chose White’s Service after seeing their work. You could tell the houses where Chris White worked. He did not destroy the yard with a skid loader or damage good trees with falling trees and branches. It is good to see someone who takes pride in his work. I was very happy with their work and price. I was even more happy not having to clean up after they finished.

We contacted Chris regarding a large pine we needed removed. He was very quick to respond and arranged a visit in a day or so to evaluate and provide an estimate. Chris and his crew arrived on the day agreed upon, and began work immediately. By the time they took a lunch break, the entire tree was down. When they returned, it was amazing how quickly the job was finished. The tree was very close to our storage shed, but they were able to take it down without any damage. They also did a very thorough job of cleaning up after the work and left the yard in great shape. We would have no qualms at all about recommending White's Tree Services and will be using them for future work.
